Hydroxytyrosol Grades: Purity & Origin Guide | AIHerba

Hydroxytyrosol Grades: Purity, Origin and Formulation Selection

Hydroxytyrosol grades should be compared by measured content, production origin, complete composition and performance in the intended formulation. The ingredient name alone does not establish whether a material is an olive-derived extract, a purified ingredient or a formulated blend.

For manufacturers and R&D teams, a clear specification helps avoid costly mismatches between a promising sample and the material required for production.

Review AIHerba’s hydroxytyrosol product and bulk supply information and use this guide to define the grade, documents and application tests your project needs.

What Is Hydroxytyrosol?

Hydroxytyrosol is a defined phenolic compound with CAS number 10597-60-1 and molecular formula C8H10O3. Its identity is documented in PubChem’s hydroxytyrosol record.

Olive-derived ingredients may contain hydroxytyrosol alongside other constituents. A purified hydroxytyrosol ingredient is a different purchasing proposition from a broad olive extract.

Oleuropein is also a different compound. If your project requires an oleuropein-standardized botanical material, start with the olive leaf extract product page and request its specific composition.

Hydroxytyrosol Content, Total Polyphenols and Purity

Three figures can appear in supplier literature, but they should not be used interchangeably.

Reported figureWhat to clarify
Hydroxytyrosol assayThe quantity of hydroxytyrosol measured using a specified procedure and reporting basis
Total polyphenolsThe broader analytical response, method and reference equivalent used
Chromatographic purityHow the percentage is calculated, which signals are included and whether it represents mass content

A total-polyphenol result does not establish the hydroxytyrosol percentage. Similarly, a prominent “HPLC purity” figure needs a clear explanation of the calculation.

For quantitative purchasing decisions, request the assay method, reference standard, units and as-is or dry-basis declaration. Review other constituents and impurities through the appropriate tests rather than assuming that one percentage describes the entire material.

Natural-Origin and Synthetic Hydroxytyrosol: What Should Buyers Ask?

Hydroxytyrosol identity and production origin are separate questions. A chemical identity result does not, by itself, establish the route used to manufacture the ingredient.

If olive-derived origin is required, request the source material, plant part or process stream, manufacturing description and supporting traceability records. If a supplier describes a biotechnological route, ask for the route declaration and relevant supporting documents.

Chemically synthesized hydroxytyrosol has also been evaluated in a specific EFSA scientific opinion published in 2017. That opinion concerns a defined material and proposed uses; it is not blanket evidence that every hydroxytyrosol grade is suitable for every market or application.

Record origin requirements in the purchasing specification before requesting samples. Verify the intended product and destination-market requirements for the actual material.

Comparing Hydroxytyrosol Ingredient Forms

The following categories are useful for purchasing discussions. They are not a statement that every form or concentration is currently stocked by AIHerba.

Commercial formMain purchasing questionUseful supporting information
Olive-derived extractWhat is the hydroxytyrosol content within the botanical mixture?Source records, assay, composition and physical properties
Purified ingredientHow are identity, quantitative assay and related substances controlled?Analytical methods, reference-standard information and batch results
Standardized powder blendHow much hydroxytyrosol and carrier are in the delivered powder?Full composition, assay and powder-handling information
Liquid preparationWhat exactly is the concentration and solvent system?Units, density where relevant, solvent composition and storage data

For liquids, distinguish weight percentage, weight-per-volume concentration and other reporting conventions. For powders, confirm whether the assay applies to the final product after blending or drying.

A “carrier-free” declaration addresses added carriers; it does not mean that every other naturally occurring or process-related constituent is absent.

Hydroxytyrosol for Supplements, Beverages and Cosmetics

Supplements

Match the ingredient assay to the finished-product design, then evaluate blend uniformity, flow, filling or compression behavior as appropriate.

Confirm that analytical recovery in the finished product is suitable. A raw-material method may require additional work before it can be used in a more complex formulation.

Beverages and drink mixes

Test the ingredient at the proposed concentration in the actual formula. Record appearance, taste, dispersion or dissolution, and changes after the intended processing and storage conditions.

Ask the supplier to define the conditions behind any “water-soluble” statement. Do not infer finished-beverage clarity or shelf life from the chemical name alone.

Cosmetic formulations

Review composition, intended ingredient identity and the supporting documents required by your technical team. Evaluate color, odor, compatibility, packaging interaction and stability in the selected formula.

An antioxidant positioning does not establish antimicrobial preservation. Finished-product testing remains necessary for the claims and functions you intend to use.

Stability and Packaging: Specify the Evidence You Need

Before selecting a grade, ask what stability information is available for that composition and packaging.

For development trials, record the storage temperature, light exposure, headspace, container and sampling schedule. Assess appearance and the relevant analytical endpoints separately.

Do not assign a shelf life to the finished product solely from the shelf life of the unopened raw material. Processing, co-ingredients and the final package need to be included in the validation plan.

If the sample changes during a trial, provide the supplier with the batch number, formula conditions, process history and observations. This creates a useful technical discussion instead of relying on an undefined description such as “unstable.”

How to Compare Hydroxytyrosol Suppliers and Prices

Request quotations for the same assay basis, origin requirement, composition and delivery scope.

Consider material cost, freight, additional testing, packaging and the work needed to qualify the ingredient. Higher nominal purity is not automatically the most economical option for every formulation.

Ask for a batch COA and specification before approving the trial order. Confirm that the commercial material will be supplied against the agreed specification and that meaningful changes will be communicated.

Request hydroxytyrosol specifications and the available batch documentation for your target grade.

Send AIHerba a brief covering:

  • Target hydroxytyrosol content and analytical requirements.
  • Required production origin and physical form.
  • Carrier or solvent restrictions.
  • Intended application and destination country.
  • Evaluation quantity, initial order and expected repeat demand.
  • Required documents, delivery location and timeline.

We can review the request against available materials and documentation. Current sample terms, minimum order, packaging, additional testing and lead time are confirmed in the quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all hydroxytyrosol extracted from olive leaves?

No. Request a production-origin declaration for the specific ingredient. The compound name alone does not establish botanical origin or manufacturing route.

Is total polyphenol content the same as hydroxytyrosol content?

No. These describe different analytical targets. Request a specific hydroxytyrosol assay when that is the constituent your specification requires.

Does a high HPLC area percentage guarantee the same percentage by weight?

Not automatically. Confirm how the laboratory calculates the result and whether a quantitative assay against a suitable reference standard is provided.

Can I replace oleuropein with hydroxytyrosol at the same addition level?

Do not assume equivalence. They are different compounds; the formulation, evidence and specification must be reassessed for the intended ingredient.

Can a sample be supplied for formulation evaluation?

Submit the requested grade, sample quantity and delivery country. Availability, charges and shipping arrangements are confirmed for the specific request.
